Shouler Family History

The Carey Family At Pill; A Family Of Bristol Channel Pilots – Early History

The earliest Careys to establish themselves at Pill in Somerset (Easton-in-Gordano or St. Georges as it has variously been called) are believed to be William and Mary Carey.  William Carey married Mary Gilmore on 27th. February 1794 at the church of St. Philip & Jacob Bristol (we are almost sure that this is the correct marriage – there are no others between a William Carey and a Mary at around this time and place).

St Philip & Jacob, Bristol      27 Feb 1794

William Carey of this parish and Mary Gillmore of this parish were married by Banns

Both parties marked with a X

Witnesses were Jeremiah David (FW), William Watkins (FW) and ?..an Rogers [FW = Frequent Witness]

We then have in the Easton-In-Gordano Copy Register (Somerset Record Office - some pages are missing from the main register) baptisms for the children of William and Mary:

All of the five sons went on to start their own families at Pill, establishing a line of Bristol Channel Pilots which continued into the first quarter of the twentieth century.  We do not yet know the occupation of William Carey (senior), whether he was also a pilot.

Census Data for Mariners

The 1841 census recorded seamen on shore, at the time of the census, but not those on board ship, docked in ports of moored in rivers etc. so some of the Carey pilots are not recorded in this census.

The 1851 census recorded seamen on board ships, in port or docked in rivers, for the first time. They were enumerated by the Master and collected by the local Officer of Customs, whose duty it was to submit the records. The Registry General for Shipping & Seamen (RGSS) had a similar responsibility for the enumeration of ships at sea, within territorial waters.

The 1861 census recorded seamen on board all ships in port or docked in rivers and returns were submitted to the Officer of Customs. The RGSS assumed responsibility for those at sea in territorial waters and for the first time, those 'on the high seas.'

The 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns were filed as in 1861, following the ordinary census records, for the port at which the ship was docked on census night, or to which it returned, following its voyage.
