Shouler Family History

Clarissa Carey & Madeira

Clarissa Maud Carey (Clarice), my great aunt, was born in 1890, the daughter of William Henry Carey and Edith Fanny (née Coles).  She was a fashion buyer for one of the large London stores, later becoming an Hotelier in Madeira and eventually retiring to Chichester.  She died in 1980.

Clarice married José Pedro de Freitas on October 9th. 1920, José’s family were vineyard owners in Madeira.  In 1932 Clarice and José left for Madeira and there ran the ‘New Avenue Hotel’ in Funchal.  Although she kept her British nationality, she had to register under the Alien’s order and inform the police when she changed her residence.
