The High House Press, Shaftesbury

James E. Masters, a schoolmaster, began printing at High House in Shaftesbury High Street in 1924, purely for pleasure, his wife Beatrice assisted him with some of the typesetting.  The press moved to Westbury-on-Trym, near Bristol in 1937 and production came to an end when James Masters died at the age of 66 on the 22nd June, 1943. Beatrice Masters died on the 3rd July, 1959.  Nearly all of the books produced were in small, numbered limited editions, usually in runs of less than 200, with the first few copies (25 or 50 say) being for presentation, the rest for sale.
