Success at Last

The new HGV diversion signs are now in place to prevent HGVs from attempting the ascent into Shaftesbury from the west, using unsuitable roads; they will now be directed out onto the A30.  We hope that these signs will be effective, and we need to monitor the situation to determine whether mandatory weight limit signs are still needed.

These signs should prevent the chaos that has occurred in the past as depicted below:

21st November – A.M. Another large truck became stuck on St. John’s Hill and had to reverse down the hill and exit to Foyle Hill and Cherry Orchard – no photos of this incident available.

20th November – Monday at 10:13 a collision between a 3663 truck and a car occurred about 400m down from the Abbey School on the B3091, up to 6 Police were in attendance, Fire and Ambulance crews were also in attendance, both drivers were injured and the car driver was taken to hospital.  The road was blocked and closed for several hours.  Incident number I20:0141 refers.  We note that the National Speed Limit of 60mph applies to this narrow and steep section of the B3091 and that there is no buffer zone of 40mph between the National Limit zone and the 30 mph zone at the Abbey School.

26th October – Two incidents today; in the morning a large BWOC Fuel Tanker gets stuck and reverses down to the Abbey School St. James to turn and exit down Foyle Hill.

20th October 2006 8:30 AM – Another car slams into the wall at Pine Walk, Bimport, St. John’ s Hill, just 14 hours after the incident below and in exactly the same place as the HGV stranded.  Lucky there were no pedestrians around at the time.

19th October 2006 – Yet another juggernaut gets stuck and wheel-spins on the steep hill & hair-pin bend into Bimport.  This one looks to be unladen and just makes it after half an hour of trying, but then it has to negotiate Bimport, it cannot follow the route for ‘Through Traffic’ so has to turn into the High Street.  The notices (top picture) read ‘Unsuitable for Heavy Vehicles’ (but there is no warning for vehicles coming up the hill, the one to the right reads ‘Ambulance Station’ – tough if the ambulance wants to come into town, or go down the hill if it is blocked there.

This HGV was en-route from Sturminster Newton to Heathrow, the driver did not know the route and complained that there were no appropriate warning signs.
