History AD
888 – Shaftesbury Abbey Founded by King
Alfred, Ethelgiva becomes first Abbess. AD
1035 – King Cnut dies at Shaftesbury. AD
1260 – Charter to hold a market granted. AD
1539 – Abbey deed of surrender signed by Elizabeth Zouche,
the last Abbess. AD
1919 – Lord Stalbridge auctions off a large
part of the town. AD
1973 – Ridley Scott makes the ‘Hovis
Gold Hill’ advertisement. AD
2004 – Livestock Market closes - one of the last remaining in AD
2005 – Tesco Opens new Superstore on the site
of the Old Livestock Market, the Old Free Car and Coach Park, and the Old
Sycamore Trees. AD
2006 – Queen Mother’s Garden and Barton Hill converted into a Car
Park, presumably to stop the town centre imploding due to the Tesco effect. ‘Every Little Hurts’ - Every Lidl Helps. AD
2012 – Overdeveloped Shaftesbury finally runs
