tescopolis (tĕs-kŏp'ə-lĭs) n. derived from: [Greek akropolis : akron, top; + polis, city.] + [prefix - consisting of the initials of the owner of the firm (Mr. T. E. Stockwell) who supplied Mr. Jack Cohen’s firm with tea, together with the first letters of Jack’s surname – Cohen], alluding to the perceived monopoly of the TESCO supermarkets.  A hill-top town with a supermarket in which one might be able to save a few pence on a bag of chicken nuggets.  O.E.D.

New Developments - Too big for Shaftesbury.

North Dorset CPRE chairman Stephen Howard said he was unhappy to hear of the Ruth Kelly’s ruling. The branch of the environmental body that works to protect the countryside recognises the need for affordable homes but believes such rapid growth is not suitable for Shaftesbury.

"We are disappointed at the result," said Mr Howard. "We believe the development is too large in relation to the size of Shaftesbury and needs to be put in the context where North Dorset District Council has exceeded its housing targets over the last few years and greatly expanded Gillingham. It is suburbanising. Large areas of Dorset are already suburbanised and this will be more.”

"This is yet another development in an area already experiencing great development."

Mr Howard said he was particularly worried about the extra commuting on the local roads as the new arrivals would not all work in the town.
